In his welcome address at the Telecoms Industry Risk Management Conference, Organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Lagos, Mr. Kelechi Nwankwo, Head of Corporate Planning, Strategy & Risk Management at the NCC, highlighted the significance of the conference theme, “Evolution and Future Risk Management in the Telecoms Industry: Harnessing Emerging Technologies and Trends.” He emphasized the need for collective action in analyzing, adapting to, and effectively managing the risks associated with innovation and development in the telecoms industry.
Mr. Nwankwo underscored the rapid convergence of technological advancements, including 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cloud Computing, as potential game-changers for the industry. However, he cautioned that with these opportunities come great risks, including AI-generated misinformation/disinformation and cyberattacks, as identified by the World Economic Forum.
A key highlight of Mr. Nwankwo’s address was his emphasis on the critical importance of mitigating technological risks and leveraging technological innovations to address broader environmental, societal, economic, and geopolitical challenges. He stressed that this approach is vital for safeguarding the industry’s growth and sustainability in the face of evolving threats.
Quoting Mr. Nwankwo, he stated, “How we can mitigate technological risks and use technological innovations to provide solutions to address environmental, societal, economic (disruption of supply chains for critical goods & resources), and geopolitical (attacks on critical infrastructure) challenges, appears critical.”
This statement underscores the overarching theme of the conference: the need to not only identify and manage risks within the telecoms industry but also to leverage technological advancements as tools for addressing broader societal and global challenges.
As the conference progressed, participants engaged in fruitful deliberations, exchanged ideas, and collaborated on developing strategies to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the telecoms industry.
