The Federal Government of Nigeria organized a Stakeholders’ Sensitization Workshop on Deep Seabed Activities in Abuja, drawing attention to the growing importance of deep-sea exploration and its potential for national economic development. The event attracted policymakers, industry experts, environmentalists, and representatives from various organizations, all focused on the sustainable exploration of Nigeria’s seabed resources.

The workshop, aimed to enlighten stakeholders on the current state of Nigeria’s deep seabed activities, explore future opportunities, and ensure sustainable practices in line with international regulations. With Nigeria’s exclusive economic zone holding untapped potential in minerals, hydrocarbons, and marine biodiversity, stakeholders discussed the legal frameworks, environmental concerns, and economic possibilities surrounding deep-sea activities.

Key presentations at the workshop highlighted the need for Nigeria to develop robust regulatory frameworks to govern deep seabed activities. Experts  underscored the necessity for Nigeria to align with international seabed laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

 

The workshop concluded with a consensus on the need for public-private partnerships to drive the sustainable exploration of Nigeria’s deep-sea resources. Participants also called for increased investment in research and development to enhance Nigeria’s capacity for deep-sea exploration.
