The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is intensifying its sensitization efforts on telecommunications fraud. Telecommunications fraud, also known as telecom fraud, is a serious issue that affects individuals and businesses worldwide. It involves unauthorized activities such as scam calls, text message scams, phishing attempts, and other fraudulent schemes targeting telecommunications networks and services.

By increasing sensitization efforts, the NCC is taking an important step towards raising awareness about telecom fraud and educating the public on how to identify and prevent such fraudulent activities. Sensitization campaigns can include various activities such as public awareness programs, workshops, seminars, and the distribution of informational materials.

Here are some key benefits of intensifying sensitization on telecommunications fraud:

  1. Awareness: Sensitization programs help individuals and businesses understand the different types of telecom fraud and how they can be targeted. By raising awareness, people can become more vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves.
  2. Prevention: Educating the public about common fraud techniques equips them with the knowledge to recognize and avoid potential scams. This can lead to a reduction in the number of successful fraud attempts.
  3. Reporting: Sensitization efforts encourage individuals to report incidents of telecom fraud to the appropriate authorities. Increased reporting can help law enforcement agencies identify trends, track down perpetrators, and take necessary legal actions.
  4. Collaboration: Sensitization campaigns can foster collaboration between the NCC, service providers, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders. By working together, they can develop strategies to combat telecom fraud effectively.
  5. Trust and Confidence: When people are aware of the risks associated with telecom fraud and see the proactive efforts taken by regulatory bodies like the NCC, they develop greater trust and confidence in the telecommunications sector. This can have a positive impact on the industry as a whole.

It’s important for individuals to remain cautious and stay informed about the latest fraud techniques, such as SIM swapping, call spoofing, and phishing attempts. They should also be aware of the official channels for reporting telecom fraud incidents to the NCC or their service providers.

By intensifying sensitization efforts, the NCC is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the interests of consumers and promoting a safer telecommunications environment in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently conducted a sensitization program for motor spare parts traders in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on how to protect themselves from telecom and e-fraud on mobile telecommunications networks. The Head of Consumers Affairs at the NCC, Mr. Ayanbanji Ojo, expressed the commission’s concern over the increasing complaints of financial fraud through telecom platforms.

The sensitization program, held at Agodi-Gate motors spare parts market, included an awareness campaign, lectures, and a question-and-answer session. Ojo emphasized the vulnerability of traders to events and happenings in the telecommunications space, which necessitated bringing the sensitization to the market. He advised consumers to keep their SIM cards safe, be cautious of free gifts and internet links, use strong passwords, and guard against online identity theft. Ojo also warned against investment schemes perpetrated on telecoms platforms and urged consumers to report complaints to their service providers or contact the NCC’s toll-free number, ‘622’, for assistance.

The President of the Ibadan Motor Parts Dealers Association, Mr. Moruf Olanrewaju, commended the NCC’s efforts in safeguarding consumers from the increasing prevalence of telecoms fraud. He requested that the commission conduct more routine sensitization programs in markets, motor parks, and other public gatherings to familiarize consumers with new scams before they fall victim to them.
