The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a two-day public inquiry to review three significant regulatory instruments, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the telecommunications sector. The event is being held at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Chizua Whyte, the Acting Head of Legal and Regulatory Services at the NCC, emphasized the importance of the public’s input in refining these regulations. “Your input today is crucial in refining these regulations to address the sector’s evolving challenges,” she stated.
The three regulatory instruments under review are:
- Telecommunications Networks Interconnect Regulations: Proposed amendments aim to enhance compliance, provide a comprehensive interconnection framework, and improve monitoring systems. This will ensure fair and non-discriminatory access among operators.
- Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators: This framework is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and certainty in disconnection procedures, protecting operators from unjustified disconnections and promoting healthy competition.
- Guidelines for Dispute Resolution: Updated guidelines aim to streamline the process, save time, reduce costs, and minimize service disruptions, especially for small claims. This is crucial for maintaining stakeholder confidence in the resolution process.
Mrs. Whyte highlighted the need for regulatory instruments to adapt to the evolving industry, driven by emerging technologies. She concluded by stressing the NCC’s commitment to regulatory excellence and building a robust communications sector that supports the Nigerian economy. “We value your contributions and look forward to shaping a strong, dynamic industry together,” she said.
The public inquiry is a testament to the NCC’s dedication to transparency and collaboration with stakeholders in the telecommunications industry.
