The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), through its Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), has handed over an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) in Igbesa, Ogun State.

The project, known as the Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC), is designed to enhance students’ learning experience and provide a platform for digital innovation, research, and development. This initiative aims to support Nigeria’s economic growth by equipping students and faculty members with modern technology and digital tools.

The handover ceremony, held on Thursday, featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the effective use and sustainability of the Centre.

The ETC is part of the government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion in Nigeria. It is equipped with 100 desktop computers, advanced technology applications, internet bandwidth, and connectivity tools to provide students with access to modern digital resources.

Speaking at the event, the Secretary of USPF, Yomi Arowosafe, described the Centre as a symbol of vision, commitment, and investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. He highlighted that under the guidance of the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, the USPF has been actively providing ICT access to unserved and underserved communities in Nigeria.

Arowosafe noted that OGITECH, with a student population of 9,300, is one of Nigeria’s leading technology institutions. He expressed confidence that the Centre would positively impact students by offering training in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Faculty members will also benefit from integrating technology into their teaching and research.

Additionally, the ETC will serve as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting start-ups and small businesses.

The Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, thanked the NCC and USPF for choosing the Institute as the project’s location. He assured that the Centre would be effectively utilized and maintained in line with the signed MoU to benefit both the institution and the broader community.

The USPF was established by the Nigerian government to promote universal access to ICT services, especially in rural and underserved areas, ensuring that more Nigerians have access to affordable telecommunications services.
