…Highlights the Functions of Complaint Response Unit (CRU)


On 21st and 22nd of March 2024, Kano State Police Command embarked on sensitization campaign aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its Complaint Response Unit (CRU). The initiative which is focused on engaging with traders, commuters, and the general public at markets and motor parks across the State is part of the Command’s commitment to fostering transparency, accountability and trust amongst the Police and the public in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM.

2. In a bid to further enhance a more robust community-police relations and responsiveness in handling complaints against Police Officers, the Police Command has identified the need to proactively engage residents in key public spaces towards raising their awareness about the existence and functions of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and ensuring that community members are well informed on how easy it is to report incidents, lodge complaints against inactions of the Police and seeking Police assistance in case of emergencies.

3. Furthermore, members of the public to know that the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) plays a crucial role in ensuring that complaints against Police misconduct, abuse of power, or any form of unprofessional behavior are promptly received, documented, and investigated. This increase in awareness of the functions of CRU at key public spaces is also aimed at encouraging more citizens to come forward and report their grievances regarding Police activities.

4. Going further, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc urged members of the public to utilize the CRU as a means of seeking justice, accountability, and redress in cases where their rights may have been violated or where they have encountered misconduct by Police Officers.

5. This outing by the Sensitization Team which was led by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa engaged the stakeholders at some selected markers; Sabon Gari, Kwari, Singa and Mallam Kato and also Motor Parks including Kano Line, Filin Parking and Unguwa Uku Motor Park. Issues discussed include channels of reaching out to the Police for emergencies and complaints against Police actions. The overall objective which is encapsulated around community policing program implementation has brought about the required synergy with members of the public and ended with the stakeholders having appreciated and thanked the Commissioner of Police for the initiative and pledge to continue to give the Command all necessary support, assistance and cooperation.
