Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani embarked on a diplomatic mission spanning Wales and Sweden from April 29 to May 3, 2024. His primary objective: to forge strategic alliances and attract substantial investments into the nation’s burgeoning technology sector.
Dr. Tijani’s week commenced with meticulous planning, as he chaired a virtual meeting with Ministry Directors to fine-tune operational strategies for optimal efficiency. Subsequently, he delved into discussions with Lana Graf, the Global Lead for Artificial Intelligence/Deep Tech at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank, to explore avenues for collaboration and investment in cutting-edge technologies.
The Minister’s journey then led him to Wales, United Kingdom, where he engaged with Swansea University, renowned for its prowess in semiconductor fabrication. Touring the institution’s state-of-the-art Clean Lab, Dr. Tijani initiated talks on crafting specialized programs to address Nigeria’s talent deficit in the semiconductor industry.
Amidst seminars and discussions at the SEMI Talent Forum, held under the theme ‘Building a Digital Future,’ the Minister underscored the urgency of cultivating talent to meet the industry’s surging demand. Teaming up with SecureID and SEMI Europe, agreements were inked to explore training initiatives and curriculum development, promising to invigorate Nigeria’s semiconductor landscape.
Invited by the Swedish government, Dr. Tijani embarked on a series of high-level meetings in Stockholm, focusing on fostering investment partnerships in innovation and digital technologies. Discussions with key Swedish stakeholders, including Vinnova, underscored the potential for close collaboration in research and ecosystem development.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani’s diplomatic sojourn aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious Renewed Hope Agenda. By nurturing international collaborations and enticing investments, Nigeria aims to fortify its position as a hub for technological innovation and economic growth.
